A great wee seaside links course with amazing views out to the Bass Rock and the Firth of Forth.
The weather is particularly clement in East Lothian, Dunbar’s annual rainfall is 24 ins. (60cm) and the towns proud boast is that of sunshine capital of Scotland. However when the bar breeze blows and the prevalent south westerlies often do this, quite often Winterfield becomes a true test of Golf.
In mitigation the trees at Belhaven School and the Promenade wall do offer some protection. The golf course has seldom, if ever, been closed because of frost/snow. Therefore one is guaranteed a feast of golf all year round.
All in all if you enjoy a test of golf on a links course steeped in history that is more a walk than a hike, then Winterfield Golf Course merits more than a cursory glance.

Played on 7.7.2019. As part of a visit to the Scottish Open 2019, we have booked an accommodation in the village of Dunbar. The tranquil coastal village offers two 18-hole golf courses. Spontaneously, we decided to pay a visit to Winterfield Golf Club and play a game on a sunny Sunday afternoon. A start time was no problem at all, the game mode was manageable, so we also had time for lots of photos. From each lane you can see the sea! It is a link course that also has the typical pot bunker. The first 9 lanes, except for lane 1, are still very flat and rather unspectacular, so it becomes much more interesting and challenging on the backnine, especially when the wind comes into play. Here there are also some elevated tees with fantastic views of the sea and the beach. The course is quite short (PAR 65 for men / PAR 68 for women), but not least has a lot of rough and borders (eg the Atlantic) its challenges. The trajectories already require a precise game, as some tracks are also very close, for example, the opposing tracks 12 and 13 share almost a fairway. Walkers on the edge of the square should also keep an eye on. Extraordinary is the driving range, which seems to be played with own balls and played over the fairway of the 10th track. If you play the 10, the players on the driving range take a break! The green fee was cheap with 25 British Pounds in our view. The same price we paid for a hire racket incl. Trolly. The staff in the small, spooky Proshop in the clubhouse was very friendly, the atmosphere Scottish relaxed. The plumbing in the rather old but typical time-honored clubhouse was apparently modernized in the meantime. By the way, he did not ask us for an HC. The course is certainly not a high-end linkscourse, but it impresses with its location, location, location and can only be recommended.
