Wonderful course with views

Hard to understand some of the negative reviews on here. As a 4 ball with indeed a combined age of 280 but with average bogey handicap indices (18) we had a delightful round at Salobre Old Course yesterday.

The setting is magnificent, with panoramic views of the mountains and distant sea. The staff were friendly. The fairways and greens were in great shape, though the spongy nature of the grass meant little roll and it was essential for chip shots to land on the green as anything short would simply die. Plenty of bump and runs!

We had the good fortune to play in lovely weather, with nobody holding us up in front or pushing from behind, and coming a day after the exceedingly difficult Anfi Tauro this course was something of a relief.

There were a few glitches. The score card, bizarrely, has been printed with incorrect par values. It was obvious from the outset, from the (correct) signage at the hole and in satnav watches and the buggy but it would have been helpful to have been alerted to this fact. Some direction signs were misleading, eg on the third where the sign said carts should go right when another, on the left, said “ This way” !

But these were minor distractions in what was otherwise a tremendous day’s golf. I only wish we wereplaying here again, rather than our next round being back in the taxing purlieus of Anfi Tauro…

Disappointed with Old course Salobre

- They have 2 booking programs, but they are not connected
- It was not possible to book or pay online
- The reception closes at 2 pm
- I waited 3 days to answer my questions via email
- Buggys are slow (top speed 16km per hour) and old, the buggy ball cleaners have dirty water, no GPS
- greens were 2x ok, medium speed very different grass
- There were no staff on the driving range so I spent € 4 to find that the passer blocked
- The balls in the driving range are old and worn
- The noise of stone breaking at a nearby construction site was annoying
- Hole numbers have been replaced, but old data and hole plans are still on the net
- They don't have a birdie book, pin position
- On teeing areas are not set tee markers for different difficulty
- The restaurant (Casa Salobre) is only open for weekends
- Fairways soaked, embedded ball a fee times
- The bunkers are hard, unmaintained and with a lot of stones
- The only bright spot was the price of 35EUR with buggy

Bad condition, disappointing experience and not worth the money

Among the golf courses on Gran Canaria, Salobre Old is at the very bottom of our rankings and we certainly won't play it a second time. The whole course is extremely touristy, the golfers' handicap is apparently not checked in advance so that as many as possible can be funneled through, which means that high handicappers and holiday golfers populate the course and prevent the game from flowing properly. The course is challenging, so a (hopefully real) maximum handicap of 20 should be required. The fairways are unkempt, as are the lava-like areas in between. Some of the staff only speak broken English and are sometimes very unfriendly.

All in all, this golf course is absolutely not worth the money.
