Enjoyable, pure links golf
4.0 of 5 starsReviewed July 29, 2024
Played mid-June 2024, HCP 16
A left-wing course. Period. Without restrictions!
According to the club itself, it is the 18th oldest golf course in the world (from 1841) – but someone has been counting carefully! In any case, you can “breathe tradition” – from the original Robertson clubs to the “ancient” team captains’ plaques to the display cases full of monstrous trophies – that’s something!
The course is, as befits a links course, right by the sea - you can only get to the clubhouse from the car park over a bridge. The rock-hard fairways stretch between the dunes, and now and then they come dangerously close to each other - you can hear the odd "fore" (if the wind doesn't blow it away). Away from the fairways there is heavy hard rough - balls are almost impossible to find and very difficult to hack out. The typical pot bunkers lie in wait for prey on the fairways. Filled with the finest sand - very playable!
In general, the condition of the course is excellent - you can see this especially on the lightning-fast, fairly interwoven greens. Putting is fun there, even if you have to be extremely careful not to get caught with 3-putts or more.
Water hazards rarely come into play - every now and then a ditch runs across the course - unfortunately this is not always immediately apparent in advance. You should study the course beforehand.
Some of the fairways run directly along the beach, and many of the elevated tees offer views of the sea – simply beautiful!
The layout is mostly varied, the PAR3s in particular are exciting! The idea is mostly the same though - stay on the fairway, avoid rough and bunkers and putt with "feeling"! This won't always work, but the holes are fair - mostly quite wide and with a bit of skill, even the bunkers can be easily eliminated from play. The course isn't particularly long either - 5,704 yards from YELLOW, 6,142 from WHITE, 6,318 from BLACK. There are also only two par 5 holes. In a few cases, a blind shot is necessary - but if you have an idea of where the fairway continues, this is also easy to manage.
The almost omnipresent wind and the frequent showers can be unpleasant. After all, you are on the coast.
Apart from the roar of the wind, it is wonderfully quiet – no traffic, no construction noise, ...
Using a cart offers several advantages – you don't get sore feet or damage your joints on the hard ground, you avoid having to climb over higher dunes and you also have a certain amount of protection against the forces of nature.
Conclusion: A historic links course that stands in the shadow of the really big names, but is a lot of fun!
Solid 4 stars. (In the “Golf Bear Ranking”: 7 out of 10 points.)

Beautiful Links Course
4.0 of 5 starsReviewed September 19, 2018
If you are in the area, you should have played the course. A little hard to find and only accessible via a bridge on foot. Played on 11.9.18. A lot of wind and sun. In some places great view of the sea. A mix of links and seaside. Moderate green fee. Can you play
