Great course

I am not sure where the 2 star ratings from before come from, this course is superb - Olazabal is a great designer. Bearing in mind the course is only 2 years old, it is going to be even better in the future. As part of a group of very experienced low-handicap golfers playing La Monacilla for the first time, we all came off the course full of praise - most of us have played all the top courses in Spain and would rate this in the Top 10-20 already. Definitely one to play if you are in Huelva Province.
Disappointing boring course!

The clubhouse was not ready yet, so receipt was in a container next to the driving range. Starting time was no problem, we were alone on the course! We expected a lot of this course and after a bland hole 1, holes 2 - 7 did meet our expectations. Interesting and varying holes with some elevation. Exciting par 5 water hole 7. After that the inspriration of Olazabal seemed gone. Holes 8 - 18 are the most boring ever. Only very flat straight tree lined holes with uninspired bunkering and only variation is in length. What could be the reason for this? Lack of funds due to unsold houses? I hope Olazabal will be more inspired at the next Ryder Cup!

All in all a sad situation. Started in the clubhouse. Rather makeshift and uninviting to buy anything there. Tea boxes still worked. Fairways don't deserve the name - both visually and in terms of maintenance. Little grass and that was mostly yellow or looked burnt - and above all a rock-hard ground. It helps to make the drive a little longer, the position of the ball was mostly terrible. Greens were ok but quite slow for the hard ground. Visiting the restaurant was ok - we had a good beer with our Spanish flight partner 😉 We didn't eat. Altogether even 45 € is too much…
