Located just 10minutes from the sweeping Mediterranean beaches of the Costa del Sol and only 30 minutes from Malaga Airport.
Designed by the renowned Cabell Robinson, each 18-hole course has been created to ensure a testing, yet truly exhilarating experience.
The three 18-hole championship courses all offer a different challenge,
America Course: Campo America is enhanced by spectacular views to the Sierra de Ojén and Mediterranean Sea.
It’s wide, linked fairways and relatively few bunkers make this a slightly easier driving course, though the hilly topography requires a lot of carry across steep brush-covered side slopes. while the small raised greens demands more precise club selection to hit the mark.
There are water hazards on the 9th and 16th.
Asia Course: The spectacular Campo Asia has plenty of challenging holes, guaranteeing a testing round of golf which puts a premium on the approach shot.
The oldest of our three courses and the one most respected by the professionals, it is narrow and short, with four par 5 holes demanding skill and strategy.
Look out for the 10th with its classic design, and the 5th where the aim of your drive is especially critical. The 18th requires full concentration. Remember not to over-club off the tee or this lengthy par 5 could spoil your scorecard.
Europa Course: A dramatic course but easier for the average golfer, with generous fairways, flatter terrain and slightly larger greens than Campo America and Asia. Notable for one main bridge and four smaller bridges across the River Ojén, which features in eight holes, cutting across three fairways. There are four tunnels for golf carts.Water hazards guard the 3rd and 14th greens. The 14th is at the maximum limit of what is allowed for a par 3 at 233 metres. The par 5 11th is the longest hole at 524 metres.

Wonderful resort with sloping golf

In mid-April, we played all three of the resort's similar courses. There are hardly any flat fairways; the courses occasionally feature steep uphill and downhill sections, and slopes are standard. The paths between the individual holes are sometimes very long, making the courses almost impossible to navigate without a buggy. The buggy is therefore included in the quite reasonable green fee. We mostly played with the sunset green fee; sunset in April is around 9 p.m. anyway. The resort is attractively designed and elegantly nestled into the mountainous landscape. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful.
However, some criticisms should be raised: despite heavy rainfall this spring, the greens are not up to the standard one would expect at comparable resorts. The fairways, however, were in immaculate condition. Some bunkers also require either sand replacement or at least the knobby sand to be removed with appropriate machinery. We cannot understand the criticism of a player with mobility difficulties regarding not being allowed to use a buggy after a rainstorm, as the steepness of some fairways makes driving on the wet grass areas life-threatening.
We weren't affected by construction activity, presumably because it was halted during Easter week. However, we agree with the criticism; excessive construction activity in all areas doesn't necessarily make the Costa del Golf (Sol) more attractive. One sometimes wonders if buyers can be found for all these ugly buildings. In conclusion, we can rate the resort positively. If you're looking for a pleasant stay and don't mind slopes, you'll definitely be in good hands at La Cala Resort.

A few days ago I played in La Cala again. Four days after a moderate rain, the fairways, which were now completely dry, were still closed to buggies. When I asked whether I could get an exemption as a recognised severely handicapped person, the management told me that this was not possible. I can only conclude from this that older, severely handicapped golfers are not welcome in La Cala. Thank God there are many other, sometimes better, golf courses here on the Costa del Sol without discrimination.

Europe course with demands, in short: it is steep and sloping.

We only played the Europa course, which we liked a lot. The layout of the course is typical for the region: constant ups and downs provide variety, a buggy is highly recommended. The fairways are well maintained, but the hard surface and short grass cut often make shots unpredictable. The ball rolls impressively far, but sometimes lands in unexpected places. In short: it is steep and sloping.
One positive aspect is that bushes and trees mostly stay away from the fairways and thus forgive minor mistakes. The landing zones are pleasantly wide, only a few holes seem frighteningly narrow. On some tees, however, length is required to overcome small ravines or the bushes in front of the tee box.
Good news: Construction work near the clubhouse is coming to an end. As part of a parking expansion project, the number of parking spaces has been doubled. The hotel is also undergoing renovation. Final completion is planned for summer 2025, as we were told at reception.
Tip: The resort offers great packages for all three courses. They also have good rates for Twilight Golf.
