Golf in the heart of noble Biarritz

Played on September 25th, 2024. The 18-hole course (PAR 69) from 1866 is located practically in the middle of the city of Biarritz, very close to the sea. You can see the sea briefly through the houses on the 4th tee. But you also have a beautiful view from the 4th tee of the surrounding area with the half-timbered houses around the courses, the mountains behind Biarritz and the Biarritz lighthouse. There is no direct parking lot, at least for guests, but you can park for free on the street in public almost in front of the entrance to the course. We had a 100m walk, although the tee times were almost fully booked. Just the walk to the clubhouse through the gate, past a statue and an old advertising column, is an experience in itself. You can feel the charm of the venerable club. The staff in the office were very friendly. There are apparently two tee times per hour per day that guests can book online. The green fee in high season is €105 including a manual trolley. There are no discounts. The course is flat and a cart is not necessary. It is more of a parkland course, although trees do not line the fairways everywhere. As a result, the tees are mostly open and balls are usually misaligned. There are no real water hazards and the number of bunkers is manageable. The fairways also mostly just go straight ahead. Something special is the tee on hole 15, which goes over the PAR3 of hole 14. The 18th tee is right next to the green of hole 10 and you have to be a little careful. After hole 3 you pass the clubhouse again and then cross the road to holes 4 to 9. Large visual tee boards show the course at the tees. There are no toilets on the course here either. Overall, it is a shorter and easier course. The condition was mostly good, although there were bare patches here and there on the fairways. The greens were all sanded and two tees were closed for renovation and therefore moved forward. Despite the sand, the greens were relatively fast and true. Most members, although not all, greeted us in a friendly manner. As already mentioned, play was brisk on a sunny Wednesday morning and the game ultimately lasted over four hours, even though we were paired up with a flight of two that was playing ahead of us on the back nine. At the first tee, a starter ensures that everything runs smoothly and briefly explains the course to guests. The clubhouse consists largely of the changing rooms and the restaurant (not used), which is obviously popular with members. The changing rooms with wooden lockers and the sanitary facilities are a bit old. On the other hand, the club cat greets you very friendly from above the changing rooms. We had a great day at the venerable Golf de Biarritz and can definitely recommend the round. A discount on the high green fee, which is probably appropriate for the region, would have been appropriate due to the restrictions described, but ultimately guests should be grateful to be allowed to play here at all.

Fair place right in the city

First about the region: Biarritz and the region are not so well known as a golf region in Germany. Many courts directly or with a view of the sea. Most with a view of the neighboring Pyrenees. Green fees are usually very fair, especially in winter. Played the LePhare course in December. after an extremely heavy rainy season in France. There was room for that - because mostly dune subsoil in excellent condition. Location is ideally still in the city (10 minutes on foot to the center). If you live in the Hotel Regina or in Regina Apartments or in hotels nearby, the space is on the doorstep. Space has divided two halves by a street.
Reception is extremely friendly and helpful. A colleague's comment about the lack of parking spaces is irrelevant. The parking spaces in public spaces are sufficient and not further away from the clubhouse than clubs with their own parking spaces. Important: Don't be put off by online reservations. Just call or drive by. A flight always goes if not a tournament. Space is flat. Easy for good handicappers. For 20-36 quite challenging but not unfair. Lanes 1-9 are easier. 10 - 18 partly trickey. Trolley is enough. Overall well maintained and in top condition. Good place for the first and last day on vacation.

Flat up and down

Going up and down flat, this applies to the first 9 holes, the second nine are (slightly) more exciting, but the greens are not (green 11 and 12 as exceptions).
Compared to the golf courses in the area (at the same time), the fairways were in bad shape. bunkers mostly just around the greens (good sand). other obstacles rather modest (a few rows of trees) the whole made a slight grubby impression. the lunch in the 19th was, however, recommended.

You can only book 48 hours. In advance and parking there is almost no - unload bag and then somewhere in the quarter a P search.

if you think about what to do in the near vicinity of golf (makila, chiberta, hossegors, saignosse, moliets, ...) then you can skip * le phare * without hesitation.

Anyway, for me it was a unique encounter.
