We are persistently working on our project of playing old and very old golf courses...
Donald Ross and the former home of the PGA of America, and the American Golf Architects Society of which he was the founder and first President.
In total there are over 500 golf courses designed by Donald Ross - 400 in the USA - 40 of them in Florida. This was built by his people in 1926 and opened in 1927. Donald Ross saw this course and worked here with his people. He is said to have never seen a third of the courses he designed.
Our Englishman put us on the right track, Dunedin is of Scottish origin - like course architect Donald Ross - they still host the Highlands Games here.
Founded by Manamaker department stores, the PGA celebrates its centenary in 2016. The club officially became the PGA National Golf Club in 1945 - First Home Course - Administrative headquarters was here from 1956 - after Chicago ceased to be its headquarters - until 1965 when it moved to the East Coast in Palm Beach. There was a lack of further development, they wanted to build more courses.
The Seniors PGA Championship was held here from 1945 to 1962.
The PGA Merchandise Sow, the largest and most influential in the world, also had its birthplace here. The first PGA trade fair took place in the parking lot of the golf club in 1954, a stark contrast to the one in Orlando today.
Several modifications have taken place on the course, the most important being in 2006 and 2007 when the original layout was restored.
In 2014, the course was listed third on the National Register for Historic Places.
We played a round here, with great pleasure, hitting the balls on a well-maintained course. On the first lanes we heard Scottish music that could be heard from a distance - what a start.
We thought the course was easy when we studied the score card on tee 1. With an average of around 330 meters, the holes are not particularly long, and the level fairways hardly offer any difficulties. We were quickly taught better - the big (small) end determined. Many below-average, pedestal-like greens are very difficult to play. Only a very well hit ball lasts, all others are almost without exception too long. The defense of the greens is also often very strong, with bunkers sometimes as tall as a man. Ultimately, the greens themselves, excellent to play, lightning fast with many small breaks - served us a few three putts.
For once there were no losses - hardly any water hazards - all balls found the 18th hole.
Very nice courteous staff.
The club is in the middle of implementing the strategy plan - 2021 - 2023 - to trim the club and the course for the future.
